Dear diary: writing about a trip
A diary entry is a short piece of writing about your day. It begins with the date and Dear diary. We write about what we did in the order that it happened, in the past simple: went, saw, ate, rode. We use I and we, because it is our own story. We also write how we felt: happy, tired, excited, proud. Adjectives and adverbs make the entry come alive: green fields, ate happily. Use short sentences and a new paragraph for a new part of the day. Do not copy the diary on page 84 of your book. Write about your own trip.
| Part of a diary | Example |
|---|---|
| Date | Friday, 6 March |
| Opening | Dear diary, |
| What happened | We went to the farm. I fed the sheep. |
| Feelings | I felt proud. I was very tired. |
| Description | green fields, fresh air, ate happily |
Friday, 6 March. Dear diary. Today we went to my uncle’s farm in the Fayoum by minibus. The fields were green and the air was fresh. I fed the sheep, and they ate happily. After that, my cousin and I rode a donkey slowly along the path. I felt proud because I rode all the way. It was a wonderful day, and I was very tired when we came home.

Diary day. The child plans a diary entry with five notes: where, who, first, next and how I felt. Then the child writes 60 to 70 words in the past simple and reads the entry aloud. The grown-up circles two adjectives and one adverb.
