Explanation

Looking carefully means we notice small details. Yara noticed that the piece was old. The archaeologist noticed a tiny part of the pot. Careful looking helps scientists learn about the past: how people cooked, what they used and where they lived. It also helps us in daily life. We notice a wet floor, a friend who is sad or a car on the road. There is no wrong opinion about a story if we give a reason. We say: I think … because … . Read the questions and give your own answer.

QuestionStart your answer with
Why is careful looking important?I think … because …
What can old pots tell us?They can tell us …
Which character do you like?I like … because …
Worked examples

Yara looked at the blue piece carefully. She saw a line of small flowers on it. This was a clue that people made it long ago. A careful look helps us learn. Old pots and tools can tell scientists how people lived. They can show what people ate and what they made with their hands. Looking is the first step.

Read and listen to the text.
Karim

I think careful looking is important because it helps us notice problems.

Hoda

I think so too. A scientist looks at a pot and learns about the past.

Karim

My favourite character is Adel because he is curious.

Hoda

I like Yara because she is careful.

Now you. Tell a grown-up one thing you noticed today by looking carefully.
Class activity

Look closely. Put six small things on a tray for one minute. Cover them. The child says what was on the tray and one detail of each, such as a colour or a shape. Then draw a favourite character from the story and write one sentence: I like … because … .
