First, next, then: events in order
Connect Primary 5 Term 2, Unit 12: pp. 94–99
GoalPut the events of a story in order and write a five-sentence summary.
New words
first · at the beginningnext · after thatthen · after thatafter that · laterfinally · at the endsummary · a short text about the main events
Explanation
A story has events in order. We use words to show the order: First, next, then, after that and finally. Each sentence uses the past simple: they walked, he saw, she called. A summary is a short text that tells only the main events. A summary of five sentences is enough. Use one sentence for the beginning, three for the middle and one for the end. Look at the order of part two of the story.
First, they put a rope around the place.→Then they dug with small brushes.→After that they found more pieces.→Finally the bowl was complete.→The bowl went to a museum.
Worked examples
First, an archaeologist and two students came to the trail. Then they put a rope around the place and dug very slowly. After that they found more pieces. Finally they put the pieces together and saw a small blue bowl. The bowl went to a museum.
Read and listen to a summary of part two.
