Explanation

A mosaic is a picture or pattern made of many small pieces fitted together. The pieces can be tiny tiles, stones, glass or coloured paper. Mosaics decorate floors, walls and fountains in many buildings. A mosaic uses shapes and colours in a pattern. To make a paper mosaic, a grown-up helps us cut small pieces of coloured paper. We arrange them into a picture, leave tiny gaps between them and glue them down. A culture project is a team task. The team chooses music or art that shows their culture, shares the jobs, practises and then shows it to others. Every member has a task, and we listen to each other’s ideas.

Class activity

Make a paper mosaic. With a grown-up, cut small pieces of coloured paper. Arrange them into a simple picture, such as a boat, a kite or a flower. Leave tiny gaps and glue them down. Then make a word poem for the word ARTS: one idea for each letter. Show your work and tell a friend what it says about your culture.

Practice
1
What is a mosaic?
2
Look at the tile pattern. Which shape comes next?
3
Name one material that can be used for a mosaic.
4
Why does every team member get a task?
