Discover P2 Term 2: Axis 3, Chapter 1
GoalFind the Nile on a map of Egypt, say which way it flows, and tell how the land changes the way people live.
New words
map · a picture of a place seen from aboveflow · to move along, like water in a rivergeography · learning about the land and water of a place and how they affect people
Explanation
A map is a picture of a place seen from above. On a map of Egypt the Nile is a long blue line. The Nile flows from the south to the north, and it reaches the Mediterranean Sea. On most maps north is at the top, south is at the bottom, east is on the right and west is on the left. Most people in Egypt live close to the Nile, where there is water and green land. Far from the river, much of the land is desert. Geography helps us understand how the land and water change the way people live.
Worked examples
Mariam puts her finger on Aswan, in the south. She follows the blue line up the map to the sea. Her finger moves up, so the Nile flows north.
Youssef lives in a village beside the Nile. The river gives water for his family’s fields, and palm trees give shade.
In the desert there is very little water, so only a few people live there. The land helps decide where people live.
Class activity
Draw your own map. Use a big sheet of paper. Draw a long shape for Egypt, with help from a grown-up and a map in a book. Colour the Nile blue and draw an arrow along it to show which way it flows. Write north at the top and south at the bottom. Put a star where you live. Show your map to a friend and follow the Nile with your finger.
Practice
1

2
Which arrow points to the north on a map? Say the letter.
B, the arrow that points up.
3
Why do most people in Egypt live near the Nile?

4
Tell a friend what the land is like where you live: flat, hilly, sandy or green?
