What we see at night
Discover P2 Term 1: Axis 2, Chapter 1
GoalSay what we can see in the sky at night and in the day, and draw my own sky.
New words
night sky · the sky after the Sun has gone downstar · a tiny bright dot of light in the night skyMoon · the big round shape that glows at night; it is not a star
Explanation
When the Sun goes down, the sky gets dark. This is the night sky. Look up! You can see many stars. They look like tiny shining dots. You can often see the Moon too. Sometimes clouds hide the stars. In the day sky we see the Sun, clouds and birds. The stars are still there in the day, but the bright Sun hides them. Never look straight at the Sun.
Worked examples
Youssef looks up from his balcony after dinner. He sees the Moon and many stars.
In the day Mariam sees the Sun, a white cloud and a bird in the sky.
Omar draws his own sky on dark blue paper. He draws a big Moon and five stars.
Class activity
Sky watch with a grown-up. Find a safe place, such as a balcony with a railing or the street in front of your home. Look at the sky at night for five minutes. What do you see? Draw it on dark paper with a white or yellow crayon. The next day, draw the day sky. How are the two skies different? Never look straight at the Sun.
