Living things of the Nile
Discover P2 Term 2: Axis 3, Chapter 3
GoalName animals and plants that live in or beside the Nile, and say how we keep the water clean.
New words
aquatic · living in or on waterreptile · an animal with dry, scaly skin that lays eggslitter · rubbish dropped where it should not be
Explanation
A river scientist visits a school and talks about aquatic life: the living things that live in or on the water. Many kinds of fish live in the Nile, such as tilapia, catfish and Nile perch. Some are tiny and some are bigger than a child. A soft-shelled turtle lives in the river too. A crocodile is a reptile. Crocodiles live in the Nile in the far south, near Lake Nasser. Frogs, geese and egrets live beside the water, and reeds and lotus flowers grow there. We watch wild animals from far away and never touch them. All these living things need clean water, so we never drop litter in the river or the canals.
Worked examples
Dr Hala shows a photo of a soft-shelled turtle. The turtle is shy. She says we watch wild animals from far away.
Some living things are in the water and some live beside it.
Nour’s class sees litter in a canal. They decide: cans and bottles go in the bin, not in the water.
Class activity
My clean water plan. Draw a river with the animals and plants that live in it. Then write or draw three things you can do to keep water clean, for example: put litter in a bin, tell a grown-up if you see a spill, and never wash dirty things in the river. Go near the river only with a grown-up.
