Explanation
Many farmers in Egypt grow crops like wheat, rice, cotton, oranges and dates. A farmer plants seeds, waters the plants and harvests them. Some farmers also look after animals like cows, buffaloes and goats. Farmers sometimes use machines like tractors. A factory is a place where workers and machines make things from materials. A bakery factory makes bread from flour and water. Other factories make cloth, furniture and bottles. Factory workers follow safety rules and wear things like safety vests. Farms, factories and shops work together to bring food to our homes.
Worked examples
Omar’s uncle is a farmer. He plants wheat, waters it, and harvests it with a machine when it is golden.
A bakery factory uses flour, water and a machine to make bread. The workers wear safety vests and clean gloves.
The wheat travels: the farmer grows it, the factory turns it into bread, and the shop sells the bread to us.
Class activity
Follow a food. Choose bread, milk or an orange. With a grown-up, find out where it comes from before it reaches your home. Draw the path: farm, factory (if there is one), shop, home.
