Review: halves and showing data

Learner’s Book 1: Units 11–14, pp. 156–220
GoalFind halves and read Venn diagrams, pictograms, tables and block graphs.
New words
half · one of two equal partspictogram · a chart that uses pictures to show how manymost / fewest · the biggest / the smallest number
Explanation

A half is one of two equal parts. When we cut a cake into two equal parts, each part is half. To find half of a number of things, share them into 2 equal groups. Half of 8 is 4. Venn diagrams, Carroll diagrams, pictograms, tables and block graphs show data. For each one, read the title and the key first. Then count, and use the words most, fewest, more and fewer.

A block graph: the tallest column is the cats. 5 children chose cats and 3 chose dogs. 5 take away 3 is 2 more.
Class activity

Share and count: take 12 beans. Share them equally between you and a friend. How many each? Then ask 10 people what their favourite colour is and make a pictogram or block graph. Which colour has the most?
