New words
table · numbers or words in rows and columnsrow · goes across, from left to rightcolumn · goes down, from top to bottom
Explanation
A table shows information in rows and columns. A row goes across. A column goes down. To find a number, first find the right row. Then slide your finger along to the right column. The number where they meet is your answer. We can also make a table from a pictogram: count the pictures in each row and write the number in the table.
Row ‘pears’ and column ‘Tuesday’ meet at 1.
| Snack | Monday | Tuesday |
|---|---|---|
| apples | 2 | 5 |
| pears | 4 | 1 |

How many cakes were sold on both days? On Friday 3 and on Saturday 5. 3 and 5 make 8 cakes.
Here is a pictogram of the fish in three ponds. Count each row and put the numbers in a table: pond 1 has 5, pond 2 has 3 and pond 3 has 6.
Class activity
Make a table at home. Rows: your family members. Columns: ‘cups of water’ for 2 days. Every time someone drinks a cup, add a mark. At the end, write the number in each box. Who drank the most?
