Venn diagrams, Carroll diagrams and pictograms
Answers are for parents and teachers.
1
Sort the cutlery drawer or a pile of 10 small things with a Carroll diagram. Choose a rule such as ‘made of metal’ and draw two columns.
Every thing in exactly one column; the child counts each column and says which has more.
2
Put a string loop on the floor. Use the rule ‘things that are round’. Find 8 things in your home and put them inside or outside.
Round things (coin, ball, plate, button) inside; the rest outside. Ask: how many inside? how many outside?
3
Ask 5 people which drink they like best: milk, juice or water. Make a pictogram with one picture for each answer.
Any correct pictogram with a key; the number of pictures equals the number of people (5). The child names the drink with the most pictures.
4
Here is a pictogram. How many more apples did Leo pick than Mia?
3 more (Leo 6, Mia 3).
5
Say one sentence about your pictogram using the word ‘most’ and one using ‘fewest’.
For example: ‘Most people like juice.’ ‘Fewest people like milk.’
