Greater and less on the track

Learner’s Book 1: Unit 1, pp. 25–26
GoalUse the number track to find a number that is greater or less than another number.
New words
greater · more; a bigger numberless · fewer; a smaller numbernumber track · a row of numbers from 1 to 10, in order
Explanation

On the number track the numbers get greater as you go to the right, towards 10. They get less as you go to the left, towards 1. To find a number greater than 4, look to the right of 4: 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 are all greater. To find a number less than 4, look to the left of 4: 3, 2 and 1. If you add one more object each time, the number gets 1 greater. If you take one away each time, it gets 1 less.

Add one block at a time: 3 blocks, then 4, then 5, then 6. Each time the number is 1 greater.
Class activity

Build a staircase: put 1 block in the first column, 2 blocks in the next, then 3, and go on to 10. Each step is 1 greater than the step before. Then take one block away at a time from the tower of 10. Each time the number is 1 less.
