Explanation

Temperature tells us how hot or cold something is. We measure it with a thermometer. A thermometer is a thin tube with a coloured line inside. When it gets hotter, the line goes up. When it gets colder, the line goes down. The numbers beside the tube show the temperature in degrees. A high line means hot. A low line means cold. A line in the middle means warm.

Worked examples
010203040°Chot
The line is very high. It is a hot day.
010203040°Ccold
The line is very low. It is a cold morning, like the water in a fridge.
010203040°Cwarm
The line is in the middle. It is warm, a nice day for a walk.
Class activity

Weather watch: with a grown-up, look at a thermometer outside in the morning and again in the afternoon. Is it hot, warm or cold? Did the line go up or down? Remember: never put a thermometer into hot water yourself.
