Review: sorting sets and telling the time

Learner’s Book 1: Units 7–8, pp. 97–117
GoalSort things into a circle and outside it, and tell days of the week and o’clock and half past times.
New words
set · a group of things that go togethero’clock · the time when the long hand points to 12half past · the time when the long hand points to 6
Explanation

A set is a group of things that are the same in some way. In a Venn diagram, things that belong go inside the circle. Things that do not belong go outside. There are 7 days in a week: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday. On a clock the short hand shows the hour and the long hand shows the minutes. When the long hand points to 12 it is o’clock. When it points to 6 it is half past.

Worked examples
Look at the circle above. It holds things with wings. A bee, an owl and a plane go inside. A cat, a fish and a car go outside.

The long hand points to 6 and the short hand is between 8 and 9. It is half past 8.
Class activity

Sorting and clock game: sort 10 things from your bag or home into ‘things that are round’ inside a loop of string, and ‘things that are not round’ outside. Then make the clock times your partner calls out (o’clock and half past) with a paper clock.
