Explanation

We can go on counting places up to 10th. They are 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th. In words they are first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth and tenth. Before means the place just in front. After means the place just behind. 5th comes after 4th and before 6th. The places beside a 5th thing are 4th and 6th. They are next to it.

Ten fruits sit in a row on a market stall. The 4th fruit is a fig. The fruit after the fig is a lime. The fruit before the fig is a plum. The fruits next to the fig are the plum and the lime.
Nine fish swim in a line. How many fish are in front of the 4th fish? Fish 1, 2 and 3, so there are 3. How many fish come after the 7th fish? Fish 8 and 9, so there are 2.
After 8th comes 9th, and after 9th comes 10th. Before 10th comes 9th.
Class activity

Washing-line game: lay 10 socks or paper strips in a row. Point to one and your partner says its place (‘That is the 7th!’). Then your partner closes their eyes, you take one away, and they say which place is empty.
