Line up 5 toys. Say each toy’s place: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th. Which toy is 3rd? Which toy is last?
The child names each place in order; the 3rd toy is the middle one; the last toy is the 5th.

Tell a grown-up how you get ready for bed. Use 1st, 2nd and 3rd.
For example: 1st I wash, 2nd I brush my teeth, 3rd I put on my pyjamas. Any sensible order is fine.

Find three things at home. Say where each one is using on, under, in or beside.
Any correct sentence, such as ‘The cup is on the table’.

Put 6 cups or toys in a row. A grown-up hides a coin under one and says, ‘It is under the 4th one!’ Find it. Then swap and you hide the coin.
The child counts 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th from the same end and lifts the 4th thing. Check they start counting from the end the grown-up means.

Write the missing ordinal numbers: 1st, 2nd, ___, 4th, 5th, ___, 7th.
