Adding one more

Learner’s Book 1: Unit 5, pp. 69–71
GoalAdd 1 more using a ten frame and counting, and read and write a number sentence with + and =.
New words
one more · add 1 to a numberequals · is the same asnumber sentence · numbers and signs that show an addition
Explanation

To add 1 more, put one more counter on the ten frame. Then count how many there are. 2 add 1 equals 3. When you add 1 more, you get the next number when you count. After 6 comes 7, so 6 add 1 equals 7. We can write this in words: ‘2 add 1 equals 3’. We can also write it with signs: 2 + 1 = 3. The sign + means add and the sign = means equals. This is a number sentence.

Worked examples
7 add 1: put 7 counters on the frame (blue), then 1 more (orange). Now there are 8. 7 + 1 = 8.
9 add 1 equals 10. The ten frame is full! 9 + 1 = 10.

Start at 4 on the number line and jump 1 forward. You land on 5, the next counting number. 4 + 1 = 5.
Class activity

One-more game: make a ten frame on paper with 10 boxes. Your partner says a number from 1 to 9. Put that many counters on the frame, then add 1 more. Say the whole sentence: ‘6 add 1 equals 7’. Is it always the next number you say when you count?
