Explanation

A dangerous situation is one where people, property or nature are in danger. In an earthquake: we do not run or use the lift while the ground shakes; we get under a sturdy table, cover our head with our arms and stay away from windows; when the shaking stops, we leave the building with adults; outdoors we move away from tall buildings and electric poles. Signs of fire: smoke, a smell of burning, flames, flickering electric lights. In a fire: we leave the building at once, alert adults, call 101 and do not go back in. If there is a smell of gas: we do not light a lighter or match, do not press electric switches, we go out into the fresh air and call 104. Matches and fire are not toys. Other important numbers: 102 police, 103 ambulance.

Worked examples
“A new smell”. Zebo sat in the living room and noticed a smell of gas coming from the kitchen. She did not switch on the light and did not go near the stove. She took her little sister by the hand and went out to the yard, told the neighbour and called 104 from her phone and gave the exact address. The gas service came and checked the pipe.
Class activity

“We make the call”: in pairs role-play with a toy phone: one child calls the service, the other is the dispatcher. They practise saying name, address and what happened clearly.

Practice
1
If you smell gas, what must you NOT do?
2
Name the numbers of the fire service, ambulance and gas service.
3
What should you tell the dispatcher when you call?
