Explanation
Science helps us understand the world around us: why the sky is blue, how plants grow, why it rains. Each science studies its own area: biology studies living nature, physics bodies and light, chemistry substances, history the past, mathematics numbers and shapes. Scientists observe, ask questions, carry out experiments and draw conclusions. Science also helps solve problems such as air pollution and diseases. All scientists were once curious children. To become a master of their profession everyone must study and learn.
Worked examples
“Observation notebook”. Feruza wanted to watch how the seasons change. Every day she observed a tree from the window, drew it and wrote the date. Within a month she saw the colour of the leaves change. Her science teacher praised her and showed her observations to the class. Feruza felt a little like a “scientist”.
Class activity
“Which science?”: the teacher reads questions (“Why can a bird fly?”, “When was Samarkand built?”, “What is 7 times 8?”); children say which science they belong to.
