Explanation

Drivers, passengers and pedestrians are road users. A child on roller skates, a scooter, a bicycle or a gyro-scooter also counts as a pedestrian and must follow pedestrian rules. It is safe to use such transport in a yard, a park or a promenade; going out onto streets with cars is not allowed. Children under 14 do not ride bicycles on streets where cars drive. Before riding, put on a helmet and knee and elbow pads, and do not get distracted by a phone or music while moving. Cross the street only at a pedestrian crossing, getting off and walking your vehicle.

Worked examples
“Scooter and road”. Mohira got a new scooter as a present and wanted to try it on the street too. Her dad first had her put on a helmet, then said: “The place for a scooter is the yard and the park, the street is for cars.” Mohira rode slowly on the park path and let pedestrians pass. At the zebra crossing she got off and walked her scooter across.
Class activity

“Traffic-light game”: the class plays traffic lights in the corridor. Red: everyone stops; green: children cross the marked crossing line but still look left and right. Play in a safe, clear space.

Practice
1

2
What protection should we put on before riding a scooter?
3
Why should we not use a phone while moving along the road?
