Air pollution
Textbook pp. 16–17
GoalUnderstand why air gets polluted and how to keep it clean.
New words
exhaust gases · chiqindi gazlaratmosphere · atmosferapublic transport · jamoat transporti
Explanation
When cars run, exhaust gases come out of the engine. Where there are many cars, these gases collect and form smog. If harmful substances enter our body with breath, we may get a headache or feel sick. To keep air clean we need more clean transport such as trams, trolleybuses, the metro and electric cars. Planting thick bushes and trees between streets and houses also protects against the gases. And we ourselves can go short distances on foot or by bicycle.
Worked examples
“On foot to school”. Sabina walks one kilometre from home to school. Her dad offered to take her by car. Sabina said: “The air is clean, the weather is nice, I’ll walk. It is good for my health and for the city.” On the way she passed through a boulevard with bushes and joined a friend.
Class activity
“Plan for clean air”: children make a table: on the left something that pollutes air, on the right what can be done instead.
