Explanation

If we see something dangerous or wrong happening around us, we may not be able to fix it ourselves. But we can notice it and call adults to help, and that is how responsibility shows. For example, if we see smoke, smell gas, notice an open manhole or a lost small child, we do not keep quiet: we tell adults or call the right number. Sometimes the thought “They won’t believe me” gets in the way, but telling is better. A volunteer is a person who does useful work voluntarily, without pay. Children too can volunteer in the school library, the yard or the neighbourhood, with adults guiding them.

Worked examples
“The open manhole”. Nodir saw that a manhole cover on the neighbourhood path had been removed. He did not go near it, did not let his friend near it, and told the shopkeeper. The shopkeeper phoned the head of the neighbourhood. Half an hour later the manhole was covered. The head of the neighbourhood praised Nodir.
Class activity

“Little volunteers”: the class plans one small job for a classmate or the school (arranging books, watering flowers) and writes in a chart who does what.
