Civic qualities: solidarity
Textbook pp. 7–8
GoalUnderstand what solidarity is and what it gives a community.
New words
solidarity, working together · hamjihatlikselfless help · xolis yordamunited, friendly · ahil
Explanation
Selfless help is help given from the heart, without anyone ordering it and without expecting anything back. Solidarity means people supporting each other and joining together for a shared goal. In a united class or neighbourhood everyone feels needed and calm, and work gets done faster. Where there is no solidarity, quarrels grow and progress stops.
Worked examples
“The class flower bed”. The flower bed in front of the classroom had dried up. Feruza gathered everyone and made a duty rota: some water the plants, others ask parents to help with pulling out weeds. A month later the flowers bloomed. Nobody expected a reward, but everybody felt proud.
Class activity
“Shared bridge”: in groups of 4–5 children make a bridge from paper and glue. Each child may make only one part. Then groups tell how they agreed. (The teacher helps with scissors.)
