Explanation
Our health depends largely on what we eat. Foods are divided into several groups: grain products (bread, rice, pasta, potatoes) give energy; dairy is good for bones and teeth; meat, fish, beans, peas and nuts help the body grow; fruits and vegetables are rich in vitamins; fatty and sweet food should be eaten little. If we eat a balance of everything, our body is strong and our mood is good. Eating too many sweets, fast food and fizzy drinks is harmful.
Worked examples
“The plate”. In the school canteen Zebo imagined her plate divided into parts: one for vegetables, one for fruit, one for rice, one for meat or beans. Her friend took only sweets. In the afternoon Zebo felt strong and was active in class, while her friend got tired quickly.
Class activity
“Healthy plate”: children assemble a healthy lunch on a paper plate from magazine pictures or their own drawings and show it to the class.
