Explanation
Discrimination means treating a person badly because of some feature of theirs. For example, if someone is pushed aside or humiliated because their skin colour, language, nationality, age, sex or health is different, that is discrimination. It tramples on a person’s rights. It differs from an ordinary quarrel: in a quarrel two children cannot share something, argue and then make up; in discrimination a person is hurt not for what they did but for being “different”. People with disabilities suffer especially from such treatment.
Worked examples
“Two events”. First: Sherzod and Anvar fought over one toy car, shouted at each other, then agreed to take turns. Second: a new pupil, Aygul, came to the class; she spoke slowly. A group of children did not let her join games and laughed at how she spoke. The first is an ordinary quarrel, the second is a sign of discrimination.
Class activity
“Quarrel or discrimination?”: the teacher reads short situations. Children step right (quarrel) or left (discrimination) and say why.
