Textbook pp. 20–21

Explanation
People always use nature’s riches, but sometimes they harm them. Factories release waste into water and air. Harmful substances from rubbish heaps can soak into the soil and pollute drinking water. If forests are cut down, animals and birds lose their homes and the air is cleaned less. People can also affect nature in a good way: they plant trees, save water and set up nature reserves. Protecting nature is the duty of all of us.
Worked examples
“The neighbourhood canal”. In spring the canal in Ravshan’s neighbourhood filled with rubbish and the water stopped flowing. Ravshan told his father. On the weekend the neighbours gathered and cleaned the canal. The water began to ripple again and the garden trees could drink. Ravshan realised that even a small action can make a big difference.
Class activity
“Cause and effect”: pairs match cards (for example “forest cut down” and “animals lost their homes”), then suggest one good action.
