Explanation
People of different nationalities live around us: Uzbek, Karakalpak, Kazakh, Tatar, Russian, Tajik and others. We are curious about their language and customs. If relatives or friends live far away, we write letters and call them. When we visit another country we are guests: we respect our hosts, follow the rules in public places and do not forget to say thank you. Before going it is good to learn the words for hello and thank you in their language.
Worked examples
“New words”. Sardor’s uncle’s family has moved to another country. In summer Sardor visited them. On the plane he learned two phrases: “hello” and “thank you”. A shopkeeper smiled when she heard these words and gave him a free apple. Sardor understood that speaking a few words in a new language brings people closer.
Class activity
“The traveller’s suitcase”: groups plan an imaginary trip: which country, what to pack and which rules to follow, then present the plan to the class.
