Explanation
More than a hundred nationalities and ethnic groups live in Uzbekistan. They keep their own languages, clothes, food and customs. Many cities have national cultural centres of different peoples, where children learn their mother tongue, songs and dances. Every year on 30 July the Day of Friendship of the Peoples of Uzbekistan is celebrated. When neighbours respect each other, everyone lives calmly and happily. In class and in the neighbourhood we, too, make friends with people of other nationalities and take an interest in their holidays.
Worked examples
“Festive clothes”. Preparations began at school for the Day of Friendship of Peoples. Dilshod became interested in the national dress of his Korean classmate Roman. Roman told him the name of the clothes and when they are worn. Dilshod talked about his skullcap and robe (chopon). Each learned a lot about the other’s culture and they became friends.
Class activity
“Our class is a small Uzbekistan”: children briefly tell their family’s nationality, language and one custom, and add it to a class “culture wall”.
