Explanation
Global warming is the slow, long-term rise of the Earth’s temperature. Scientists say a big cause is human activity: air is polluted when electricity and cars are produced and fuel is burned, and forests are cut down. As a result glaciers melt, sea levels may rise, and droughts and storms may become more frequent. Everyone can help: save electricity and water, reduce waste, use less plastic and plant trees.
Worked examples
“A family plan”. Madina’s family wrote saving rules and stuck them on the fridge door: switch off the light when leaving a room, close the tap while brushing teeth, walk short distances. A month later they saw the electricity bill had gone down. Madina told her classmates about it too.
Class activity
“Saving champions”: for one week each child marks the days they saved energy or water on a class chart; results are discussed at the end of the week.
