Textbook pp. 70–73
GoalKnow the craft traditions of different regions and the tradition of plov (palov).
New words
craftsman · hunarmandcarpet · gilamskullcap · do‘ppiplov · palov
Explanation
Every region has its own craft. In Samarkand carpets are woven from silk. Rishton is famous for pottery. In Chust skullcaps (do‘ppi) are sewn. Jewellery-making and gold embroidery have long been developed in Bukhara. In Chimboy yurts (round portable homes) are made. Masters teach their secrets to apprentices. Plov (palov) is one of the main national dishes of the Uzbek people. Its main ingredients are rice, meat, carrots, onions and oil. The Uzbek plov culture is included in the UNESCO list. Other countries also have rice dishes, but each cooks them differently.
Worked examples
“Two cities”. Munisa visited her uncle in Chust. There she saw her uncle’s family sewing skullcaps: the grandmother, her aunt and her cousin were all working together. Back home she remembered her mother’s scarf from Bukhara, decorated with gold embroidery. She understood that the two cities keep two different crafts alive.
Class activity
