The place and functions of religion in society
Textbook: pp. 5–8
GoalList the main functions of religion in society, illustrate them with examples and describe how freedom of conscience is guaranteed in Uzbekistan.
New words
religion (Arabic: faith, belief) · dinworldview · dunyoqarashconsoling (compensatory) function · tasalli berish vazifasifreedom of conscience · vijdon erkinligi
Explanation
The word din comes from Arabic and means faith or belief. The academic study of religion treats religion as a system of belief in what is regarded as sacred, together with the morality, practices and community life built on that belief. Researchers group the functions of religion in society as follows: shaping a worldview, offering consolation in hardship (the compensatory function), uniting people, regulating behaviour through moral norms, providing communication through rituals and festivals (the communicative function), and spiritual-moral education. In the 17th–19th centuries some European authors predicted that religions would fade away as science and progress advanced; this forecast was not fully borne out, and religion remains an important part of social life in many countries. Uzbekistan is a secular state: the Constitution gives everyone the right to profess any religion or none, does not allow religious views to be imposed by force, and establishes equality before the law regardless of religion.
Worked examples
A festival or ritual held together (for example, a shared meal in a neighbourhood) brings relatives and neighbours into contact, which illustrates the communicative and uniting functions.
After a heavy loss a person may take part in religious ceremonies and feel less alone; this is an example of the consoling function.
Class activity
Divide the class into 6 groups. Each group picks one function of religion and, in 2 minutes, prepares one general example (without revealing personal details) from community life and presents it.
Practice
1
Name three functions of religion in society.
For example: shaping a worldview, consoling, uniting (also regulating, communicative, spiritual-moral education).
2
From which language does the word “din” come and what does it mean?
From Arabic; faith, belief.
3
Which function of religion does a communal festival illustrate? Explain.
The communicative and uniting functions: people gather, talk and share a common tradition.
4
Why is the 17th–19th-century forecast that religion would disappear considered not fully confirmed?
Because today a large part of the population in many countries still follows a religion and religion keeps its place in social life.
