How bread gets to our table
Textbook Part 2, pp. 10–12
GoalKnow the journey of bread from wheat in the field to our table, and learn to value bread.
New words
wheat · bug‘doygrain · donflour · unbaker · novvoy
Explanation
A farmer sows wheat in the field. When the wheat is ripe, a combine harvester cuts it and the grain is stored in a granary. At the mill the grain is ground into flour. A baker makes dough and bakes bread in a tandir (clay oven) or an oven. Then bread is taken to shops. Many people work to make bread, so we never waste it.
Worked examples
Wheat → grain → flour → dough → bread.
Wheat flour makes ordinary bread; corn flour makes zog‘ora (cornbread).
Class activity
Look at wheat grains with a magnifying glass. Crush two grains with a stone — you get flour. Then put the “Journey of bread” pictures in order: field, combine harvester, mill, bakery, shop, table.
