How is paper made?

Explanation
Long ago people wrote on clay, stone, tree bark and leather. Today paper is made from trees. Wood is chopped into small pieces, mixed with water and glue, then pressed, flattened and dried. Old paper can be recycled into new notebooks or cardboard — this saves trees.
Worked examples
Notebooks, books, newspapers and cardboard boxes are made of paper.
We collected old newspapers and handed them in for recycling.
Class activity
Testing paper: drop one drop of water on a piece of paper, cardboard and a napkin. Which soaks up water fastest? Which tears most easily? Compare the results with the class.
