Explanation

A legend (rivoyat) is an instructive story passed down by word of mouth. It teaches us how to live rightly. The textbook legend “There is blessing in effort” says that even a tiny creature helps a good cause as much as it can.

Worked examples
“The old gardener”. An old man was planting a walnut sapling. A traveller asked: “Grandpa, will you be able to eat the fruit of this tree?” The old man answered: “Our grandfathers planted and we ate; we plant and our grandchildren will eat.” The traveller admired the old man’s words.
Lesson: we do good things not only for ourselves but also for others.
Class activity

Read the legend in roles: the old man and the traveller. Then children describe the old man: what is he like? (hard-working, wise, caring).

Practice
1
What sapling was the old man planting?
2
What did the traveller ask?
3
Who will eat the tree’s fruit?
4
