Explanation
From building-set pieces we can make a car, a house or a doll. First we choose and count the pieces we need, then join them in the right order. A tangram is an old 7-piece puzzle: we can make a rocket, a ship, a house and other shapes from it.
Worked examples
Little house: a square (wall) + a triangle (roof) + a small rectangle (door) = 3 pieces.
A tangram has 5 triangles, 1 square and 1 parallelogram.
Class activity
Each pair gets a paper tangram. First they build a little house, then a rocket. Anyone who invents a new shape shows it to the class.
