Explanation

Shelves go from top to bottom: top shelf, middle shelf, bottom shelf. In a block of flats, floors are counted from the bottom up: floor 1 is the lowest. A home address can be given with two numbers: first the entrance number, then the floor number. A computer finds things by an exact “address” like this too.

Worked examples
The books are on the top shelf, the toys are on the bottom shelf.
Address “2, 4” means entrance 2, floor 4.
Class activity

“Shelf game”: draw a shelf with 3 levels on the board and stick 3 pictures on each. The teacher asks “What is on the top shelf, first from the right?” and children find it. Then children ask their own questions.

Practice
1
In a building, which floor is the lowest?
2
A cat lives at entrance 3, floor 5. Write its address with two numbers.
3
What is up high in your classroom? What is down low?
