Taking things apart
Textbook pp. 62–63
GoalBreak a thing into parts, describe each part’s colour, shape and size, and spot a part that doesn’t belong.
New words
part · qismwhole · yaxlitextra, doesn’t belong · ortiqchacube · kub
Explanation
Everything is made of parts. A house has walls, a roof, a door and windows; a tree has roots, a trunk, branches and leaves. If we split a big job into small parts, it becomes easier — programmers do this too. If we unfold a cube, we get 6 equal squares.
Worked examples
Paper boat parts: a triangle sail and a trapezium-shaped bottom. If there is a circle, it is the extra part.
Bicycle: 2 wheels, handlebars, a seat, pedals, a chain.
Class activity
In groups, children “split” a picture (e.g. a car) into parts: they count the parts and name each one’s colour, shape and size. They also fold a cardboard cube net into a cube.
