Long — short
Textbook pp. 52–53
GoalCompare two paths and find which is long and which is short.
New words
long · uzunshort · qisqafinish line · marrafaster, sooner · tezroq
Explanation
We find a path’s length by counting squares or steps. The path with fewer squares is shorter. At the same speed, the child on the shorter path arrives sooner. But the shortest path is not always the best — it must also be safe.
Worked examples
Lola’s path is 5 squares, Botir’s is 8. Lola’s path is shorter.
In a race the red turtle came 1st, yellow 2nd and brown 3rd — the brown one finished last.
Class activity
Two children walk to the board along different routes between the desks. The class counts their steps aloud and says which route is shorter.
