Explanation
To do a task we carry out steps in an exact order. Such a list of steps is called an algorithm. A recipe is an algorithm too: if a step is missing or out of place, the result fails. Computers and robots also work by algorithms.
Worked examples
Making tea: boil water → rinse the teapot → add tea leaves → pour hot water → wait a few minutes.
Washing hands: turn on the tap → wet → soap → rinse → dry.
Class activity
“Robot game”: one child is the robot, another gives instructions: “2 steps forward, turn right, raise your hand.” The robot does only exactly what it is told.
Practice
1
When washing hands, what comes after soaping?
rinse
2
Order for frying an egg: crack the egg, heat the pan, add oil
heat the pan, add oil, crack the egg
3
What is an exact order of steps called?
an algorithm
