Invent a helpful tool
ICT P4 Term 1, Theme 1: pp. 26–29
GoalPut the steps of a speech device in order, invent a helpful tool, and name ways to help beyond technology.
New words
invent · to think of and make something newinclusion · making sure everyone can join inpatience · waiting calmly and giving someone the time they need
Explanation
Some people cannot speak with their voice. A speech device lets them talk in another way. Here is how one works. The person looks at a screen of picture buttons. They choose pictures by touching, or by pressing a switch. The words appear one after another until they make a sentence. The computer sends the sentence to the speech synthesizer. The speech synthesizer turns the words into a voice that everyone hears. Inventing helpful tools starts with a need: ask what is hard, think of a tool, draw it, and ask the person if it would help. Technology is only part of the answer. Respect, patience and inclusion matter just as much.
Look at the picture buttons→Choose words with a touch or a switch→Words make a sentence→The computer sends it to the speech synthesizer→A voice says the sentence
Worked examples
Mariam notices that a classmate finds the school door heavy. She and her class invent a plan: a door that opens with a button. They draw it and ask their classmate whether it would help.
Omar’s class makes a plan to include everyone in games. They choose games that all can play and they wait with patience when someone needs more time. That is help without any machine.
The speech device steps are in order: look, choose, make a sentence, send it, hear the voice. If you swap steps 3 and 4 the voice would have no sentence to say.
Class activity
Invent a helpful tool. Choose a need, such as opening a heavy jar or finding a lost pencil. Draw your invention and label two parts. Write three sentences: what the tool does, who it helps, and one way people could help without any tool. Show it to a partner and ask, “Would this help?”
Practice
1
Put in order: (a) the computer sends the sentence to the speech synthesizer, (b) a voice says the sentence, (c) the person chooses words, (d) the words make a sentence. Say the letters.
c, d, a, b.
2
What does the speech synthesizer do?
It turns the words into a voice.
3
Name two ways to help a classmate that need no machine.
For example: patience (waiting) and inclusion (letting everyone join in); also respect.
4
Why should an inventor ask the person “Would this help?”
