When an app will not open

Explanation

Computers are very useful, but sometimes something stops working. This is a normal problem, and nobody is in trouble. Imagine a toy car that will not move. You do not break it open. First you try the easy things: is the battery in place, is it switched on? Computers are the same. If a program will not open, the easiest fix is to wait a moment and try once more. If it still does not open, a grown-up can restart the computer. The program may also need an update, which a grown-up should do. If a program still does not work after these steps, the answer is always the same: ask a teacher or a family member. Children do not reinstall programs alone.

Mina clicks on his drawing program, but it does not open. He waits a little and tries again. It opens. Often the first easy step is enough.

Salma’s program still does not open after waiting. She does not press buttons at random. She tells her teacher, who restarts the computer. Now the program opens.

A program needs an update. At home, Karim’s dad does the update, because updates change the computer. Karim watches and learns what the message says.
Class activity

Problem doctor. Make a paper card for each step in the flow chart. A partner reads a pretend problem, for example “my game will not open”. Put the cards in the right order and say aloud what you try first, second, third and last. Practise saying: “I need help from a grown-up.”
