Explanation
A browser is the program that opens web pages for you, like a door into a huge library. A search engine is like a helpful librarian: you tell it what you want and it shows you a list of pages that may help. A safe browser also works like a road sign. When you are about to enter an unsafe page, or to download something harmful, it shows a warning message. If you see a warning, stop. Do not click to carry on. Show your teacher or a family member. Some browsers and search engines are made for children and show only results that suit your age. They may also have parental controls and safety tips. Even a page that is not dangerous can have videos that are not right for you, so choose child-friendly websites, always with a grown-up near you.
A warning message appears→I stop→I do not click to carry on→I show a teacher or a family member
Worked examples
Mariam is looking for a picture of a camel with her aunt. A warning message says the next page may not be safe. Mariam does not click “continue”. She shows the message to her aunt, and they choose another page.
Omar wants a fact about the Nile. The browser is the door: he opens it. The search engine is the librarian: he types his question and it gives him a list of pages.
A family sets parental controls on the home tablet. Now the browser shows only results that suit children, and a grown-up decides which sites can be opened. Youssef still asks before he opens a new video page.
Class activity
Warning card game. Draw a big warning sign on a card. Work with a partner. One of you is the computer and holds up the card for a moment while saying “This page may not be safe!” The other child must do the right thing: put the pencil down and say “I will show a grown-up.” Swap roles three times. Then talk together: why do we tell a grown-up even when we did not click anything?
