Review: ICT in our lives

ICT P4 Term 1, Themes 1–2
GoalReview Theme 1: tools, ages of technology, computers, helpful technology, problems and data.
New words
hardware · the parts of a computer that you can touchsoftware · the instructions that tell the hardware what to doassistive technology · technology that helps people of determination do things independentlytrend · a pattern in numbers: going up, going down or staying the same
Explanation

Let us remember Theme 1. Technology is tools and ideas that solve problems. Explorers use photos from the sky, GPS, magnetometers and radar to find hidden things before they dig. Technology has four ages: Pre-Mechanical, Mechanical, Electro-Mechanical and Electronic. Electricity joined the machines in the Electro-Mechanical Age. A computer has hardware that you can touch and software that you cannot. Input devices, like a keyboard, send data in. Output devices, like a screen, bring information out. The operating system helps the program talk to the CPU, which follows the instructions. Assistive technology helps people of determination. When something goes wrong, stay calm, wait, check the connection, look for the file in the usual folder and ask a grown-up. We collect data, look for trends, draw graphs and report what we find.

Pair of wordsHow they connect
keyboard and screenthe keyboard sends data in; the screen shows information out
operating system and CPUthe operating system passes instructions to the CPU, which processes them
survey and grapha survey collects answers; a graph shows them clearly
Worked examples

Hana presses the letter A on the keyboard, which is an input device. The letter appears on the screen, which is an output device. Between them, the program, the operating system and the CPU do the work.

Youssef puts the four ages on a line, oldest first. Electricity first joined machines in the third age.

Seif asks ten classmates which drink they like best. Juice gets 4 tally marks, milk 3 and water 3. 4 + 3 + 3 = 10, so every answer is counted. Then he draws a bar graph.
Class activity

Review quiz show. In groups of three, write six question cards: two about tools and the ages of technology, two about computers and software, and two about data and reports. Take turns to ask the group. Each right answer scores a point. The group with the most points chooses the next topic to practise.
