Explanation

Technology is made of tools and ideas that people create to solve problems. An archaeologist is a person who studies old places to learn how people lived long ago. Sometimes an archaeologist cannot dig, or does not know where to dig. Digging takes a lot of time, money and effort. So the archaeologist makes a survey above the ground first. Think of a cupboard full of drawers: you look at the whole cupboard before you open every drawer. Photos from a satellite show a very big area from far away. A drone flies low and takes closer photos of a smaller place. Then the archaeologist chooses the best places to look.

Worked examples
photo from abovesunny cornergarden
Youssef’s class wants a place for a school garden. A photo from above shows one sunny, open corner and one dark corner under big walls. The class chooses the sunny corner. They made a survey before they dug.
look firstring found
Mariam lost a small ring in her room. She looks over the whole floor from the door first, and sees a shine near the bed. She did not empty every drawer, so she saved time and effort.

A survey saves three things: time, money and effort. A team that digs everywhere needs many workers and many days. A team that surveys first digs only where the photos show something.
Class activity

Bird’s-eye view. Pretend you are a drone high above your classroom. On paper, draw the room as seen from above: a big rectangle, the door, and each desk as a small square. Give it to a partner. Can your partner find the teacher’s desk and the door from your drawing alone?

Practice
1
Why does an archaeologist make a survey above the ground before digging?
2
Which picture shows the tool that travels high above the Earth and sends photos? Say the letter.
ABC
3
A drone and a satellite both take photos. Which one gives a closer photo of one small garden?
4
Name the three things a survey saves.
