Explanation
Digital citizenship means using digital technology in an ethical, responsible and safe way. Ethical means fair and right: you treat people with respect and you credit the sources you find. Responsible means you think about what your actions cause. Safe means you protect yourself and others. In Term 1 you learned good habits: respect others online, credit your sources, use strong passwords, choose websites wisely, keep programs up to date and watch the time you spend on screens. Digital citizenship helps you use technology and enjoy it, and it also helps you protect your digital footprint, which we meet in the next lesson.
Habit
Example
Respect others
write kind comments
Credit sources
say where a fact came from
Strong passwords
long, secret and different for each account
Wise websites
choose sites made for children
Updated programs
a grown-up installs updates
Screen time
take breaks and play outside
Worked examples
Salma uses a drawing she found for her poster. She writes under it who made it. This is ethical: she credits the source.
Omar sees a funny video of a classmate. He thinks: could it embarrass him? He does not share it. This is responsible: he thinks about what his action causes.
A classmate asks Marwan for his game password. Marwan says no and tells his mother. This is safe: he keeps his password secret.
Class activity
Habit cards. Write the six habits on six cards. On six other cards write situations, for example: “I found a lovely picture for my poster”, “My program says it needs an update”. Match each situation to the habit it needs. Then choose one habit that you want to improve this week and tell it to a partner.
