Explanation
People affect the plants and animals around them in good ways and in bad ways. We can plant a tree and leave water for birds, or we can drop litter that hurts animals. A good explorer finds out first. To learn, use several kinds of sources. Print sources are books, articles, newspapers and encyclopaedias. Internet sources come from search engines and websites, such as the Egyptian Knowledge Bank, a free online library for people in Egypt. Always use the internet with a teacher or a grown-up. An interview means asking questions to a person who has studied the topic or lives with it, such as a park keeper or a farmer. Prepare three questions first, ask politely, and have a grown-up with you.

Worked examples
Marwan’s class plants a tree and leaves a bowl of water for the birds, which is a good effect. A picnic group leaves bottles in the park, which is a bad effect that can hurt animals.
Seif wants to learn about the birds in the park. He reads a bird book, asks his teacher to search with him on a child-safe site, and asks the park keeper some questions with a grown-up.
No.
My question
1
Which birds live here?
2
What do these birds need?
3
How can we help them?
Seif prepares three questions before the interview.
Class activity
Source hunt. Choose a plant or an animal near you, such as a palm tree, sparrows or street cats. On paper, draw three boxes: Print, Internet, Interview. In each box write where you would look (with a grown-up for the internet) and one question. Share with a partner.
