Strong passwords

ICT P4 Term 1, Theme 2: pp. 70–77
GoalSay what makes a password strong and why we keep it secret.
New words
password · a secret group of characters that opens an accounthacker · a person who breaks into other people’s computers or accountscharacter · a letter, a number or a symbol such as ! or #strong · hard for others to guess
Explanation

A password is like a key to your account. If it is easy to guess, a hacker can open the door. A hacker is a person who breaks into other people’s computers and accounts. A strong password has at least eight characters. It mixes letters, numbers and symbols, and it never includes your name, your birthday or other personal details. Use a different password for each account. If one key opens every door and it is found, all the doors are open. Keep your passwords secret from everyone except a trusted adult. One good idea is to join a few random words and add a number and a symbol. The examples in this book are only for practice, so never use them for a real account.

Salma uses the same pretend password for her game and for her school page. A hacker finds it and opens both. One key opened two doors. With two different passwords, only one door would open.

Seif tells his password to his best friend. Later the friend tells someone else. A password is secret. The only person we can share it with is a trusted adult, such as a parent.
Class activity

Treasure box password game. This is practice only, for an imaginary treasure box. Take three cards with random words (for example Moon, Tractor, Sandwich), join them, and add a number and a symbol. Count the characters: are there at least eight? Is there a name or a birthday in it? Show your partner and ask if they could guess it. Then tear up the paper. Never use a practice password for a real account.
