Explanation
A spreadsheet is a grid of rows and columns, a bit like a school timetable. Rows go across and columns go down. You write names and numbers in the boxes, and the spreadsheet can add the numbers for you, which is why it is often used for numbers. A word processor is for writing: you write your ideas, change how they look, add pictures and join your report to other information. They make a team: collect your data in the spreadsheet first, then explain it in the word processor. If you have no computer, draw the grid on squared paper and add the numbers yourself.

Habiba counts the birds at the school pond for three days: 4, then 7, then 5. The spreadsheet adds them for her: 4 + 7 + 5 = 16.
Then Habiba uses a word processor to write a title and a short paragraph saying: “We saw the most birds on Monday.” She adds a picture.

A research spreadsheet about a plant and an animal: one column for each piece of information.
Class activity
A paper spreadsheet. On squared paper, draw a table with two columns (name and number) and five rows. Count something in your classroom, such as the pencils on each row of desks. Add the numbers at the bottom. Then write two sentences about your numbers, as you would in a word processor. Which job did the table do best? Which job did the writing do best?
