Tools for messages, chats and email

ICT P4 Term 2, Theme 3: pp. 22–29
GoalName the tools for messages, chats and email, and say what each one needs.
New words
instant message · a short message that arrives at oncechat room · a place online where a group talks about one subjectemail · a message sent through the internet to an email addressvideo chat · a talk in which you see and hear the other people
Explanation

Each tool needs different things. A video chat lets you see and talk with one person or more. It needs a device with a camera, a microphone and speakers, and a program for video chats. Instant messaging sends short messages that arrive at once; they can have only words, or pictures and videos too. A chat room is a group conversation, usually about one subject, such as a school lesson. Anyone who has access to the room can read what you write. Email is for longer and more formal messages, for example asking a teacher for help with a project, and you need an email address. These tools are used through a browser or an app on a phone, and some apps must be downloaded by a grown-up. On paper, we practise with pretend names and pretend addresses only.

Worked examples
a group talksteacher watches
Mina’s class wants to discuss a science question together, with the teacher watching. A chat room is a good tool: it is a group, and it is about one subject.
emailthe teacher
Habiba wants to ask her teacher politely for help with a project. The teacher can answer tomorrow. An email is the right tool: it is formal and it can wait.
instant messagearrived safely
Marwan wants to tell his aunt that he arrived safely. A short instant message is enough, because it arrives at once.
Class activity

Four tool cards. Make four cards: video chat, instant message, chat room and email. Under each write what you need and what it is good for. Then write six situations on slips (for example: telling a cousin you are coming, sending a long thank-you to a teacher). Put each slip under the best tool. Sometimes two tools fit. Explain your choice to a partner.
