Choosing and designing transport
Discover P3 Term 2: Axis 4, Chapter 2
GoalChoose the best transport for a trip, and fill in a transport system diagram like an engineer.
New words
factor · something you must think about before you decidecargo · goods carried by a vehiclesystem · parts that work together to do a jobenvironment · the air, water, land and living things around us
Explanation
Seif wants to visit his cousin, who lives 10 kilometres away. The family car is at the garage. Walking would take about two hours, which is too long. A bicycle is cheap and good for short trips in nice weather, but 10 kilometres is far on a hot day. A car is fast and goes from door to door, but it uses fuel and makes the air dirtier. A truck carries heavy cargo but is not made for passengers. A train carries many people far, but only between stations. An aeroplane is for very long trips and costs a lot. To choose, we think about the factors: the distance, the cost, the time, the weather, how many people or how much cargo, and the effect on the environment. Engineers design transport systems in a similar way. They start with a need and a goal. Then they think about five parts: 1 location (where will it go: land, water or air?), 2 users (who and how many?), 3 resources needed, 4 results (what will it do?) and 5 feedback (how do we check that it works well?). They also try to protect the environment.
Worked examples
Transport
Advantage
Disadvantage
bicycle
cheap, no fuel
tiring far away, weather
car
fast, door to door
uses fuel, dirties the air
truck
carries heavy cargo
not for passengers
train
carries many people
only between stations
Choosing transport: advantages and disadvantages.
Part
Ferry
Need
children on both banks must reach school
1 Location
a river crossing with two landing places
2 Users
children, adults, bicycles
3 Resources
boat, captain, life jackets
4 Results
a safe crossing every 15 minutes
5 Feedback
count passengers, check waiting time and safety
A transport system diagram for a ferry on the Nile.
The ferry carries 12 people on each trip. After 5 full trips it has carried 12 × 5 = 60 people.
Class activity
Choose and design. Part 1: you want to visit a cousin 6 kilometres away and your car is not working. List three ways to get there. Write one advantage and one disadvantage for each, choose the best way and say why. Part 2: in a group, design a transport system for one need, for example children on two sides of a canal who need to reach school. Draw a diagram with Need, Type of system and the five parts: location, users, resources, results and feedback. Add one idea to protect the environment, such as using less fuel or keeping litter out of the water.
Practice
1
Name two factors to think about when you choose transport.
For example: distance, cost, time, weather, how many people, or the effect on the environment.
2
Why is a truck a poor choice for a family visiting a cousin?
A truck is made to carry heavy cargo, not passengers.
3
The five parts of a transport system diagram are numbered 1 to 5. Which number is Resources needed?
Part
Question
1
Where will it go?
2
Who will use it?
3
What do we need?
4
What will it do?
5
How do we check it?
3. Part 3 asks what we need.
4
A ferry holds 15 people. 4 trips are full. How many people crossed?
